چکیده

Banana peel; Chromium; Low-cost; Acrylonitrile; Grafting Abstract The adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions was investigated by acrylonitrile grafted banana peels (GBPs). Banana peels were treated with 10% HCl, followed by alkaline hydrolysis with 10% NaOH, and washed thoroughly. The bleaching of alkali hydrolyzed peels was carried out with sodium chlorate (NaClO3) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and glacial acetic acid. The grafting co-polymerization of acrylonitrile onto the bleached pulp was initiated by Fenton’s reagent (Fe/H2O2). The optimum conditions for adsorption of Cr(VI) were found to be the following: pH 3, adsorbent dose 4 g/L, concentration 400 mg/L and contact time of 120 min. The surface morphology of adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) before and after the adsorption. The adsorption of Cr(VI) onto grafted banana peels (GBPs) was recorded to be 96%. The adsorption data were fully fitted with the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm model and followed a pseudo-second order kinetic model. Thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption is exothermic and spontaneous. Owing to high efficiency and low cost, grafted banana peels (GBPs) can be used as effective adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. 2016 Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University. Removal of Copper(II) and Cadmium(II) ions from Aqueous Solutions Using Banana Peels and Bentonite Clay as Adsorbents

Adsorption removal of Cu(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solution using low-cost banana peels (a food waste) and bentonite clay (natural resource), was investigated. The adsorption process was studied in a batch scale at mean operation parameter which were pH, adsorbent particle size, adsorbents dosages, and initial concentrations of metal ions. All experiments were conducted at room temperature. L...

Removal of Basic Blue 159 from Aqueous Solution Using Banana Peel as a Low-Cost Adsorbent

In this paper, the adsorption of Basic Blue159 (BB159) onto banana peel as a low-cost material was studied. At first, the banana peel was sieved. Later, banana peel particles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) techniques. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out as a fu...

Removal of Cr(VI) from Aqueous Solutions Using Powder of Potato Peelings as a Low Cost Sorbent

Potato peels which are a low cost, renewable agroindustry by-product were used for the removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous effluents. Batch experiments were carried out with an artificial effluent comprising of potassium dichromate in deionised water. The effects of the initial hexavalent chromium concentration, dose of biosorbent, and removal kinetics were explored. An adsorbent dosage...

Preparation of magnetic chitosan/Fe-Zr nanoparticles for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution

Copper and hexavalent chromium are heavy metals that are harmful to human health. Natural adsorbent chitosan, due to its considerable properties such as the presence of functional groups of –NH2 and -OH, non-toxicity, low cost, and biocompatibility, has gained much attention in pollutant removal. Therefore, in the present study, adsorption of chromium (VI) and copper (II) ions was conducted in ...
